Sharon M. Bednar

Sharon M. Bednar, 50, of Weatherly, passed away at Weatherwood on Monday, June 18th, 2007.

Born in Hazleton, PA on February 27th, 1957, she was the daughter of the late Hayden and Dorothy (nee Devitt) Lehr.

She was a member of St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church in Weatherly.

Before her illness, Sharon was a teller at the M & T Bank in Hazleton.

Sharon is survived by her husband Robert; daughter Jennifer Bednar of Chesterbrook; brother John Lehr of Marion, VA; and a sister Kathryn Mehan of King of Prussia, PA. An aunt, several cousins, nieces and nephews also survive.

Rev. Floyd Caesar will celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church, Weatherly, on Friday, June 22nd, 2007, at 11:00 AM.

Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Muriel J. McPeak

Muriel J. McPeak, of Weatherly RD # 1, Weatherly, PA, passed away at her home on Saturday, June 16th, 2007.

Born in Lahaska, PA on August 7th, 1942, she was the daughter of the late Roy and Muriel (nee Cooper) Buchanan.

Prior to retiring, she was a cook at Mountain City Convalescent & Rehabilitation Center in Hazleton.

Muriel is survived by her husband of 39 years, Walter T. McPeak.

Also surviving are: son Michael Scot McPeak and his wife Leslie of Weatherly; daughter GySgt. Sharon Lee McPeak USMC and her husband Donald Phillips of Picayune, MS; sister Adelaide Scott of Washington, NJ; and granddaughter Michayla McPeak of Weatherly, PA.

Services will be held Tuesday evening at the Philip J. Jeffries Funeral Home, 211 First Street, Weatherly, PA. Rev. Peggy Sue Pfeffer, chaplain for Hospice St. John, will officiate.

Visitation will be from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Tuesday, June 19th, 2007 at the funeral home.

Jean L. Snyder

Jean L. Snyder, 76, loving wife, mother, and grandma, died peacefully on Friday, May 25th, 2007 at Somerset Medical Center in Somerville, New Jersey.

Born in Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania on May 29th, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Anna Mae and Kenneth Knappenberger.

She resided in Weatherly, PA, and was a 1948 graduate of Weatherly High School where she was also a varsity cheerleader.

Jean was formerly of Somerville, NJ before moving to Branchburg, NJ in 1977. She was employed as a teacher’s aide for the Somerville Board of Education for 2 years and then 12 years as a cafeteria aide at Immaculata High School.

Jean was a homemaker and a 50-year member of the First United Methodist Church in Somerville. She enjoyed reading, puzzles, and spending time with her family. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother and she will be missed by all.

She was preceded in death by her first husband Samuel Gangwer Jr., and her daughter Carol D. McCann who died in 2001.

Jean is survived by her devoted husband of 51 years, Leonard A. Snyder; 4 daughters Barbara Steele and her husband Thomas, Margie Polakiewiez and her husband Thomas, Linda Hagan, and Wendy Salazar and her husband Omar; 3 sons Samuel Gangwer, Gregg and his wife Barbara, and Randy and his wife Maria; 18 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; and a sister Johanna Heinen.

Memorial services will be 11:00 AM on Tuesday, June 5th, 2007, at the First United Methodist Church, 48 West High Street, Somerville, NJ. Cremation was private.

Dennis R. Metrick

Dennis R. Metrick, 52, of 419 1st Street, Weatherly, PA, died Thursday, May 17th, 2007, at the Hazleton General Hospital in Hazleton, Pennsylvania.

Born in Hazleton, he was the son of the late John and Marie G. (nee Fadden) Metrick.

Dennis was employed by Bethlehem Steel prior to their closing.

He was a member of St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church in Weatherly, a graduate of Weatherly High School Class of 1972, and was an avid lover of music and hiking.

Dennis is survived by a sister Nancy and her husband James Markovchick of Weatherly, PA; brothers Robert Metrick of Andreas, PA, and Ronald Metrick of South Daytona, FL; aunts Ruth Andrejco of Weatherly, PA, and Mary Metrick of Beaver Meadows, PA; nephews Jamie Markovchick, and Matt and Jason Metrick; and a niece Stacy Metrick Angelo. Many cousins also survive.

Friends may call at St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church, 318 Plane Street, Weatherly, PA, on Monday, May 21st, 2007, from 9:30 AM to 11:00 AM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the church at 11:00 AM.

Martha A. Hensel

Martha A. Hensel, 86, of Weatherly, died at St. Luke’s Hospital in Bethlehem on Monday, May 7th, 2007.

Born in Youngstown, Ohio on October 17th, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Grace (nee Warner) Gangwer.

She was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Weatherly where she was an elder, deacon, and member of the United Presbyterian Women.

A veteran of World War II, Martha served as a corporal in the Army Nurse Corps at the Charleston South Carolina Army Hospital.

She was a member of the American Legion Post 360 Ladies Auxiliary of Weatherly, a Red Cross Bloodmobile Volunteer, she delivered Meals on Wheels, and volunteered with the Weatherly Community Chest and the American Cancer Society.

Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Philip E. “Oakie” Hensel in 1989 and a brother Harry Gangwer III.

Martha is survived by her son Ronald of Weatherly; daughters Bonnie and her husband Calvin Fritz of Bethlehem, PA, and Lynn Hensel of Allentown; 4 grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive.

Services will be at the Philip J. Jeffries Funeral Home, 211 First Street, Weatherly, PA, on Thursday, May 10th, 2007 at 11:00 AM. Martha’s pastor, Rev. Glen Hueholt, will officiate.

Interment will be in Union Cemetery, Weatherly.

Emma J. Foote

Emma J. Foote, 83, formerly of White Haven and the Laurels Assisted Living Center in Hazleton, died Wednesday, April 18th, 2007, at Weatherwood in Weatherly.

Born in Baltimore, Maryland, on December 6th, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Wilbur B. and Ethel (nee Bumgartner) Petz.

She was a member of the Methodist faith.

Emma worked as a travel agent for AAA and ran a house cleaning business before moving to White Haven from the Baltimore area.

Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband William B. Foote in 1992 and a son Richard.

Surviving are son Gary Foote and daughter Jeanette (wife of Tom King) both of White Haven, son Robert Foote of Baltimore, MD; and brother Richard Petz of Alexandria, VA. Emma is also survived by many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Private memorial services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Anna Hrin Smith

Anna Hrin Smith, 96, of Weatherly, beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away Thursday morning, April 12th, 2007, at Weatherwood Carbon County Home.

Born in Freeland on February 17th, 1911, she was the daughter of the late Stephen and Susan (nee Wargo) Hrin.

She worked at several Hazleton area factories as a sewing machine operator, finally retiring from Scampers.

Anna married Bernard C. Smith in 1937, who passed away on December 24th, 1981. They resided in Freeland and Hazleton.

Anna attended St. John’s Byzantine Catholic Church in Hazleton and St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church in Weatherly. She enjoyed cooking ethnic foods, spending time with her family, sewing, and keeping her house. Until her nineties, Anna was a member of the Weatherly Flower Club, Senior Friendship Club, Gray Ladies, and Salem Quilters.

Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents and husband, were brothers Andrew, John, Michael, Stephen, and George Hrin; and a sister Mary Stebnitsky.

Anna is survived by her daughter Sally Ann and her husband Robert R. Chippi of Weatherly; son Dr. J. Robert Smith of Cazenovia, NY; grandchildren Maria Chippi Giunta of Weatherly, Brian Smith and his wife Barbara, Douglas Smith, Robert Smith, and Heather Smith; great-grandchildren Roberto Giunta, Cara Smith, and Brendan Smith; and sisters Margaret (Mrs. Ray) Gibson of Las Vegas, NV, and Helen Calio of Warminster, PA. In addition, several nieces and nephews from the Hazleton area also survive.

Services will be held Tuesday, April 17th, at 9:30 AM from the Philip J. Jeffries Funeral Home, 211 First Street, Weatherly, PA. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 AM at St. Nicholas R.C. Church in Weatherly with Rev. Floyd Caesar Jr. officiating.

Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Drums, PA.

Joseph G. Suravicz

Joseph G. Suravicz, 55, of Weatherly RD # 1, died at the Hazleton General Hospital on Tuesday, April 10th, 2007.

Born in Hazleton on September 6th, 1951, he was the son of the late Joseph M. & Ellen (nee Dargay) Suravicz.

He was an active member of St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church in Weatherly where he was vice chairman of the Building & Grounds Committee.

Joseph was a Navy veteran of the Vietnam Era and he was employed as a machinist at Tobyhanna Army Depot.

Along with his wife Marilyn (nee Hill) Suravicz, he is survived by a brother Lawrence J. Suravicz and a sister Diane M. Suravicz both of Weatherly RD # 1. Several aunts, uncles, and nieces also survive.

Services will be at St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church in Weatherly on Saturday, April 14th, at 10:30 AM. Rev. Floyd Caesar will officiate.

Interment will follow in the parish cemetery.

Dolores Petruncio

Dolores Petruncio, 70, of Junedale, passed away at her home on Tuesday, April 10th, 2007.

Born in McAdoo on October 16th, 1936, she was the daughter of the late Metro and Anna (nee Bodnar) Petruncio.

She was a member of SS. Peter & Paul Byzantine Catholic Church in Beaver Meadows.

Dolores worked at the Tung Sol and Chromatex plants in Hazleton.

Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister Irene Petruncio.

Dolores is survived by several cousins.

Services will be from the Philip J. Jeffries Funeral Home, 211 First Street, Weatherly, PA, on Monday, April 16th, at 9:30 AM followed by Divine Liturgy with the Office of Christian Burial in SS. Peter & Paul Byzantine Catholic Church in Beaver Meadows. Rev. James Demko will officiate.

Dean H. Gray

Dean H. Gray, 78, of Weatherly, died at Weatherwood on Tuesday, April 10th, 2007.

Born in Hazleton on April 13th, 1928, he was the son of the late Hamilton and Edith (nee Swank) Gray.

He was affiliated with Salem United Church of Christ in Weatherly.

Dean worked as a machinist at Dorr Oliver in Hazleton and he was also associated with his father in a hauling business.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife A. Gertrude (nee Brommer) Gray and son Gary.

Dean is survived by 3 step grandchildren and cousins.

A memorial service will he held at the Weatherwood Chapel on Saturday, April 21st, 2007, at 10:00 AM. Rev. Donald J. Stump will officiate.

Private burial will follow in Sky-View Memorial Park in Tamaqua, Pennsylvania.
